CANI 2020 CONFERENCE
20 & 21 NOVEMBER 2020
Fostering a sustainable, globally competitive and inclusive natural ingredients sector in Africa
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Africa is endowed with a wide variety of natural ingredients that enjoy strong demand across the globe for a wide range of uses in health, food, beauty and skincare, and a variety of other important industrial uses. CANI 2020 will cast a spotlight on the economic value of these natural resources, focusing on driving shared industrial and economic growth based on their responsible stewardship and utilisation.
CONFERENCE RATIONALE AND FOCUS
Africa’s bio-resources industry has large economic and growth potential, presenting unique opportunities for all African economies. In South Africa alone, the industry was projected to grow by 500% per year by 2018, with both its domestic and export potential also being recognised as similarly large and fast growing. It is therefore recognised that the growth of Africa’s bioprospecting industry is not constrained by the market, both on the continent and globally. However, it is recognised that the industry is constrained by several supply factors. It is to be expected that the growth in the market for bio-resource based products will be accompanied by certain associated challenges. The report by South Africa’s Department of Environmental Affairs captures the likely challenges and necessary responses thereto thus:
“Increasing demand for bioprospecting products will place these wild resources at increasing risk in the future. It is important to develop suitable resource plans for each key species, to develop harvesting practices, consistent permitting requirements and effective monitoring systems.”
Osiba Holdings’ interest in creating this event field is driven by its view, based on extensive research, that Africa’s natural ingredients sector holds enormous potential for SME development and inclusion across the sector value chain from cultivation to harvesting, processing and global commercialisation.
Thus, CANI 2020 will examine both the opportunities the bio-resources industry presents to the African continent as a whole and the constraints that hold back the full realisation of its economic and developmental potential. The conference will further examine how the sector’s development should be characterised by SME inclusion and balanced with ensuring the sector’s sustainability.
